Chemo XIII

Today's chemo appointment included another ultrasound and chest x-rays. Luckily both came back favorable, with no signs of new growth.

From Nov/Dec2011

Eila had a really hard time during the ultrasound, but it didn't last too long and we know it wasn't actually causing her any pain. The x-rays were a little easier for her to bear because they were really fast and no one but Daddy was touching her.

The chemo part of the appointment was no problem at all, she such an old pro by now. Here's a video of her singing her favorite Christmas song, O Christmas Tree, while getting her infusions.

And now she only has one more chemotherapy appointment ahead of her (insert thunderous cheers); it'll be so nice to be on the other side of this soon.

Christmas

From Nov/Dec2011

We had a wonderful Christmas in Eugene. As you might expect, we took far too many pictures to post, so please check out the web album to see them all. The girls received many wonderful gifts, we spent ALL of Christmas day unwrapping and playing. This year Annikka was also so very excited about the gifts she was giving to others, it was really sweet to watch her face as they opened them.

As I looked back over our photos, it two major themes jumped out from the day: dress-up and books.

Dress-up -- Annikka can't get enough of it.

Santa brought the girls a big, double-sided art board. It'll be interesting to see who ends up playing with it more, Daddy or the girls.

Annikka helped make the Christmas log this year.

It just may be the MOST decorated log to date.

And finally, here's a little video of one of the girls' favorite new songs/activites.

Hope you all had a very merry Christmas, too.

Nativity program

From Nov/Dec2011

Annikka was a little lamb again in this year nativity program at church. The preschoolers sang 2 songs this year, and luckily one was still her ever favorite Away in the Manger.

Eila enjoyed a little of the program, like the kids that were dressed up as a cow and a donkey.

From Nov/Dec2011

But she probably enjoyed playing with Grandpa in the nursery more (there's only so much sitting still she can handle).

Chemo XII

Eila's chemo appointment yesterday went well. She had a little rough patch at the end of November, but it seems to be behind us now and she's eating and sleeping better again. We don't really know what caused it or how she got over it, but hopefully we won't have a repeat. And now she doesn't go back for another treatment until the last week of December. It will be nice to have a break from doctors, drugs, and driving.

Ho, Ho, Ho

From Nov/Dec2011

Annikka is REALLY into dress up these days, and she's been talking about a Santa costume since mid-October. At first it was the one thing she said she wanted from Santa, because she said "he would know just where to get it". But Grandma convinced her it would be more fun to have the costume before Christmas, so that she could be Santa for Christmas.

From Nov/Dec2011

We now have one pretty happy Santa walking around our house. Thanks Grandma & Grandpa!

O Christmas Tree

From Nov/Dec2011

This year we decided to make getting the Christmas tree more of an adventure, so we ventured out to an urban tree farm. It was a cold day, but we bundled up and had a great time looking for trees with the Power family.
From Nov/Dec2011

We even got a hayride, candy canes, and hot cocoa.

From Nov/Dec2011

But the real excitement started after we got home and put the tree up. Eila couldn't believe that there was a tree in the house - she must have walked around the living and dining rooms for over 30 minutes shouting "tree, tree"!

Annikka was so excited to decorate the tree. And she was a very good big sister, showing Eila how to put the ornaments on.

From Nov/Dec2011

However, Eila's ornaments were having a hard time staying on the tree.

Eila eventually got the hang of it, although she thought removing the ornaments was just as much fun as putting them up (which made Annikka's job even bigger).

I'm a big fan of Christmas, and now each year with the girls, it's filled with more joy and wonder. It's such fun to get to start our day by the tree.

Mix Tape

From Nov/Dec2011

A few years ago, Dana and I visited Dana's family in Columbus, Ohio, to meet Taisto, our newborn nephew. While there, we went to a downtown art fair and purchased a print entitled "Mix Tape" (above) from the artist.

I really dig "Mix Tape." It looks cool, it's one of the few pieces of original art we own, and it's something that Dana and I were attracted to and purchased together (although I suppose the latter could apply to a lot of things, like our new TV).

Regardless, "Mix Tape" is cool because of the role mix tapes have played in our friendships growing up. When we were in high school and college, giving a mix tape to another person was an act of friendship; you gave your friend (or someone you hoped to be your friend) a tape of your favorite songs. And it meant something. It wasn't just a list of your favorite songs, you had to actually take the time to gather up all of your tapes and then sit down and dub each song to another tape. This took a lot of time; nowadays kids quickly and effortlessly share music online or via CD. Punks.

So anyhow, we bought the print a few years ago, but we only just now got around to framing it after Dana and I unpacked our pictures earlier this month.

Dana and Annikka dropped it off at a frame shop a couple of weeks ago, and Dana picked it up yesterday. As you can see above, it looks great.

It's been sitting in our family room since yesterday, and tonight Dana pointed it out to Annikka.

DANA: Annikka, did you see that I picked up the framed artwork from the store?

ANNIKKA: Oooh. I really like it!

DANA: Me too. Where do you think we should hang it?

ANNIKKA: How about in my room?

DANA: Well that's an idea we can think about.

ANNIKKA: Actually, I think we should hang it out here because we spend a lot of time in this room and then everyone can see it.

DANA: I think your right.

ANNIKKA: It matches that picture, too (pointing to the framed Bright Eyes poster currently hanging in the family room, see below).

From Nov/Dec2011

Dana and Annikka then went into one of those long, detailed conversations that you have with four year-olds. They talked about the similarities of the pictures, including the fact that they're both black and white, they're both matted, and they're both framed. Dana went on to (painstakingly) explain they're both pictures of ways to listen to music, one being the record album and the other being a cassette tape ... kind of like how we listen to music on an iPod, CD, or computer now.

Annikka paused, pointed at the picture and said:

ANNIKKA: I thought it was a washer and dryer.
