Christmas & family

From Nov/Dec2013

The Howe family was at our house for Christmas.  With 4 little girls, it was a very busy time but oh so much fun.  We enjoyed opening all the gifts,

Christmas project

Grandma and Grandpa come over today with all the makings for gingerbread houses.

From Nov/Dec2013

We were a great building crew.  But it was probably a toss up as to which was more fun for the girls, decorating or snacking on the little candies.

9 months

Eila had her 9 month post-chemo check-up today.  We are entering new territory for all of us, since we didn't make it this far the first time.  Needless to say, there wasn't a lot of sleeping last night for Joel or I, but Eila was her usual chipper self.  She had the usual ultrasound scans, x-rays, and blood work.  Without her port, she had to have a regular blood draw -- this is now the new low point in the visits for her.

But we are VERY happy to report that she continues to be cancer-free!  It's hard to describe how good it feels to get the "all clear" (my heart soars), although I must admit that it's still mixed with a small amount of fear for the next visit.  That only last a moment because it's easy to push those fears aside as we look at our happy 3 year old.  Very glad to be approaching the new year with this good news.

Another day at home

There is still snow every where, and so we're home again (day 4).  We needed some new activities to keep things interesting, so we made brownies

talked to Grandma for her birthday on the computer,

and made Christmas decorations.  (First picture by Annikka, not bad huh?)

Hopefully we'll be allowed out of the house soon, snow days are only fun for so long.

It's beginning to look a lot ...

like Christmas!

From Nov/Dec2013

With all that snow outside, I got the crazy idea that we need to venture out and get our Christmas tree. Once we were in the car I realized just how crazy we were because almost no roads around town were plowed yet. But we made it back home (thanks to all-wheel-drive) and it was nice to have something fun to do together.

Snow day!

From Nov/Dec2013

Having grown-up in the Midwest, it's still comical to me how excited we get around here for a snow day.  But I have to admit that their excitement is contagious, we even convinced Joel to go into work a little late (who was going to be there anyway).

Eating snow is a FAVORITE activity of both girls,

along with making snow angels,

After all that fun, we had to come inside and warm up with hot chocolate.

Reward

After a successful week of sleeping without her bosch, Eila picked out her reward of choice ...

Hopefully we'll keep moving forward.

What is missing?

From Nov/Dec2013

This was Eila's second night without her bosch (aka pacifier)!!  We are very excited to be making this transition and continually reminding Eila what a big girl she is now.  If all goes well for a week, she gets to go to the toy store and pick out a special "good-bye bosch" toy.  Fingers crossed that it will be that easy (it sure wasn't with the first kid).

Good-bye Port

Eila has been counting down to her port removal surgery, and today was the day.  This time her surgery was in Eugene (her surgeon had moved there), so we were able to stay over at Grandma and Grandpa's house the night before (and Emilie stayed home with Annikka).  It was a different experience than the children's hospital, not as many toys and things to occupy her time while waiting.  But thankful we brought along the ipad, with a new Charlie Brown movie.

From Nov/Dec2013

Another difference was that they allowed a parent to accompany her into the OR.  So Eila held Joel's hand as she was wheeled away and he waited with her until she was asleep (which was a surprisingly short time).

From Nov/Dec2013

The surgery took less than an hour and everything went well.  Now Eila has 2 ports for her memory box.  Unfortunately she was very unhappy with the nurses and doctors when she woke up -- we could hear her crying and screaming in the waiting room even (although we didn't know it was her at the time).  So they came to get us early, and she did much better once they weren't in her face/space any more.

From Nov/Dec2013

She has a cute little bandage where she used to have a big lump.  The surgeon told us that many cancer kids wear their port scar well, a sign of all they overcome.

From Nov/Dec2013

Another chapter in this story is now complete for Eila, and hopefully these won't be experiences we'll be repeating again.  She goes in for her next oncology check-up in mid-December.
