18 months!

From March 2009

Hard to believe that our "baby" is 18 months already. Because she's a little slow with her cast, I'd say her biggest change these days is with her words--wow, she has a lot of them. :) She is a real talker.

In the past week or so she has started stringing her many words together, and she'll repeat just about anything we say. We do our best to keep up with her, and I'd like to think we understand at least 75-80% of what she tells us.

Among my favorite sentences are "Daddy tickle, too" (after I tickled her) and "Daddy Mommy Annikka tent," which means, hey, you two, in the tent, now! (Her new favorite toy is her tent.)

And she would like to bring everyone in to share in her fun.

Her favorite verb is "see"--she asks to see EVERYTHING ("see doggie bark" or "see Jerry"--her name for Jerod), so we are constantly carrying her here or there to see things. It is exhausting (that cast must weigh a couple of pounds), so hopefully her cast comes off this week.

Arno LIVE

Annikka enjoyed her visit to Columbus, in spite of the broken leg. Tonight she saw her Arno again and, through the magic of Skype, they had a very interactive conversation. As you can see, a full leg cast hasn't really stopped our energetic wobbler.

Uncle Aaron has quite the effect on her.

Ohio visit

Annikka and I went to Columbus last weekend to visit my family there and go to Kristin's baby shower (Annikka's newest cousin will be here in May). We had a great visit, although it took an unexpected turn as you learned about in the previous post. Here are some pre-break photos:

Annikka, Papa, "Arno", and Mommy went to Cosi (the Columbus Children's Science Museum). Annikka really enjoyed the frog exhibit.

She and Arno got wet in the Ocean exhibit:

But her favorite part was their play park.

That night Annikka helped decorate for the baby shower.

Unfortunately, Annikka missed out on the shower because we had to go to the doctor. She has a "toddler's fracture". It is not in her growth plate, so there should be no long lasting impact. But because toddlers (or in her case, wobblers) are so active, she has to have a full cast on her tiny leg.

She did not enjoy getting the cast put on, but she enjoyed the cake she got when she came home from the clinic.

Although she misses running around, she has adjusted to her cast remarkably fast. We have seen an orthopedic specialist now for more x-rays and found out that she might have it off in as little as 4 weeks. And the cast didn't slow us down too much. We still were able to see downtown Columbus with Uncle Jake.

"Break"ing News

Dana and Annikka have been in Columbus, OH-IO, since Thursday. They're visiting Papa, Alecia, Aaron and Kristin, Jacob, and some of Kristin's family. Most important, they're attending Kristin's baby shower. They're staying at Aaron and Kristin's house. According to Dana, Annikka is having a great time.

(I'm back here in Corvallis watching the World Baseball Classic.)

This morning Dana was carrying Annikka up the stairs for a nap. As I understand it, Annikka asked to say "nigh nigh" to "Arno" (that's what she calls Aaron). Dana turned around and slipped/fell down two or three stairs. Dana says it didn't seem like a big deal. But it turns out that Annikka broke her left leg right above the ankle.

So Dana, Annikka, and Alecia spent some time at the hospital this afternoon. Annikka now has a bright pink cast all the way up to the top of her thigh! (I got to see it via Skype.)

I was a little freaked out when I heard the diagnosis, but the doc says it's actually quite common for toddlers to break bones. Apparently it's nothing to worry about; there should be no long term effects to her bones or development, because the little ones heal quicky and well.

And Annikka is doing fine. She's hopped up on Motrin and pretty happy.

The only sad thing is that she'll have to wear a cast for the next four to eight weeks, during which time she'll be unable to walk. Poor kid, she loves to walk. (Who doesn't, right?)

Hopefully we'll have some pics of Annikka in her cast when Annikka and Dana get back Monday night. Dana should have more to add, and I know you guys like looking at pictures of injured kids.

Talk to you soon.

PS: Dana's fine, by the way.
